Wasserschloss Altengronau, Medieval castle ruin in Altengronau, Germany.
Wasserschloss Altengronau is a castle ruin near Altengronau featuring two water-filled moats and preserved defensive walls. A former granary building with a stair tower from 1551 ranks among the visible remains of the complex.
The castle was built between 1506 and 1527 by Eitel Sebastian von Hutten and replaced an earlier hilltop fortress that was damaged in 1492. Later the grounds were used for paper production and stone processing.
The site shows traces of its transformation from a defensive stronghold into a working facility where paper was made and stone was processed. Visitors can recognize these layers of the past in the preserved buildings and the grounds themselves.
The site is freely accessible and it is worth viewing the water-filled moats and preserved walls from the outside. The former granary is in private ownership but can be viewed from the exterior.
The two water-filled moats were fed by the Sinn and Gronau rivers, making it a genuine water castle. This location at the river junction was no accident but a deliberate choice for maximum defense.
