Huttenburg Altengronau

Huttenburg Altengronau is a Renaissance castle ruin in Sinntal that consists of a three-story stone structure with two round corner towers. The complex sits on elevated terrain and displays typical defensive architecture from that period.

Alexander von Hutten built the castle between 1548 and 1552, reusing stone from an earlier family fortification on the same site. The structure rose during a period when the family sought to strengthen its position in the region.

The site functioned as a working center for the region over centuries, serving as a grain store and medical facility for railway workers at different times. Visitors can still see how rooms were adapted for these various practical purposes.

The site sits on elevated ground and is visible from the outside, with the stone remains being the main features to see. Wearing sturdy shoes is wise since the terrain is hilly and access is on foot.

The defensive wall that once surrounded the castle has completely vanished from the landscape, leaving no visible traces behind. Only archaeological research has documented that this protective structure ever existed.
