Felsenbad Pottenstein, Bathing establishment in Pottenstein, Germany.
Felsenbad Pottenstein is an outdoor swimming facility in Pottenstein, in the Franconian Switzerland region of Bavaria, set into natural limestone rock formations below the Finkenstein. It has several pools of different sizes along with sunbathing lawns and changing areas arranged along the valley floor.
The facility opened in 1926 and is considered the oldest outdoor pool in Bavaria. It was built at a time when recreational bathing in natural settings was still a new idea.
The pool sits directly against limestone cliffs typical of Franconian Switzerland, and the rock walls form a natural backdrop around the water. Visitors spend time between open meadows and stone faces, which gives the place a feeling quite different from a standard public pool.
The facility is open from late May through early September, and the best conditions are on warm summer days. It is within walking distance of central Pottenstein, and parking is available nearby.
The water is cleaned through natural plant filtration rather than chlorine, which is still unusual for a public outdoor pool. Swimmers often notice that the water looks and feels different from a standard chlorinated facility.
