Schloss Lichtenberg, Renaissance castle in Fischbachtal, Germany

Lichtenberg Castle stands atop the Odenwald region with distinctive Renaissance architecture featuring stepped gables and symmetrical window arrangements throughout the structure.

The Counts of Katzenelnbogen constructed the original fortress in the early 13th century, which later became the summer residence for the Landgraves of Darmstadt.

Court architect Jakob Kesselhut transformed the medieval structure into a Renaissance castle in 1570 under the direction of Landgrave George I of Hesse-Darmstadt.

The castle grounds include dedicated spaces for civil ceremonies and a restored chapel that accommodates religious wedding services throughout the year.

Local inhabitants funded the castle's expansion through mandatory dues, which generated significant tension in the surrounding community during construction.
