St. Arnualer Wiesen, Protected area in Saarbrücken, Germany.
St. Arnualer Wiesen is a protected area stretching along the Saar River, combining forests, sandy heaths, wet meadows, and swamp zones across roughly 36 hectares. The landscape includes multiple habitats that support diverse wildlife and vegetation.
The western section operated as Saarbrücken Airport until 1955, when it ceased aviation use. The designation as a nature reserve in 2004 transformed the former airfield into a protected natural space.
Local citizens and environmental groups successfully campaigned to preserve the area in 1995, preventing industrial development plans and securing its natural state.
Marked trails allow you to walk through the reserve and explore its different zones. Wear appropriate footwear since some paths cross wet or marshy areas that can be muddy.
A four-lane bridge spans the Saar River within the reserve but remains unused, a visible reminder of abandoned industrial plans. This standing structure marks where development once aimed to reshape the landscape.
