Schloss Leerodt

Schloss Leerodt is a castle ruin in Geilenkirchen with remains from various periods, including a fortified outer area with multiple sections, a two-story gatehouse, and preserved wings. The site shows both early medieval and later Renaissance-added elements in its construction.

The Leerodt family established their ancestral seat here, with the main structures built during the 17th century. These reconstructions mark the shift from a purely defensive installation to a Renaissance-era residential manor.

The site reflects building traditions that evolved over centuries, from medieval fortifications to later Renaissance details across the Lower Rhine region. Visitors can still see these different construction periods expressed in the surviving structures.

The ruin is partially enclosed by walls and can be viewed from outside, with some areas open to the public. Wear sturdy shoes as the ground is uneven and restoration work is ongoing at various spots.

The arcade arch in the western wing still retains its original brick wall today, a rare testament to craftsmanship from multiple building phases. These details show how repairs and additions were adapted over time without completely replacing older structures.
