St. Nikolaus, church
St. Nikolaus is a three-aisled Romanesque basilica in Büren's old town center that dates from the 12th century. The stone building with thick walls and rounded arches shows the clear architectural style of that early period and is carefully maintained by the community.
The church was founded in the late 12th century by two brothers and is the oldest building in the old town. Over the centuries it suffered fires and storms but was restored multiple times, most extensively in the 1990s.
The church bears the name of Saint Nicholas and has shaped community life for centuries. It serves as a gathering place for regular services, processions, and celebrations that reflect the town's religious traditions.
The church is located centrally in the old town and is easy to reach on foot. Visitors can enter for services or explore independently, with monthly tours offered and concerts held regularly.
The famous Baroque organ by Johann Patroclus Möller was originally built in 1744 for a nearby monastery and later moved here. With 43 sound registers and finely tuned tone, it draws visitors from far and wide to regular concerts.
