Wilzenberg, Mountain summit in Schmallenberg, Germany.
Wilzenberg is a forested summit in the Sauerland region near Schmallenberg, reaching around 658 meters and crossed by a network of marked hiking trails. The paths wind through dense mixed woodland and meet at the top near a small chapel and a wooden cross.
The Wilzenberg was used in prehistoric times, as traces of old fortifications found on the hill suggest. During the medieval period the site took on a new role as a place of pilgrimage, a function it has kept to this day.
A small chapel from the 1600s still stands at the top and draws both pilgrims and walkers who stop there during their hike. The wooden cross beside it is visible from a distance and gives the place a religious tone that most visitors notice right away.
The summit can be reached on foot from several starting points around Schmallenberg, with trails of different lengths and gradients to choose from. Good footwear is recommended since the forest paths can become slippery after rain.
Although this hill is far from the tallest in the Sauerland, its open position made it a key landmark in the region from early on in history. On a clear day, the view from the top is wide in every direction because no higher ground blocks the line of sight nearby.
