Schmallenberg extends over 303 square kilometers of land at an elevation of 381 meters, making it the third largest municipality in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The settlement received its town rights in 1244 after the destruction of a castle, with the first documented mention of Smalenburg dating back to 1243.
