Kyrillpfad Schanze, Educational trail in Schmallenberg, Germany
Kyrillpfad Schanze is an educational trail through forest areas with wooden walkways and bridges crossing fallen trees. The route covers about 3.5 hectares where visitors can see different stages of forest development.
A cyclone damaged the region's forests severely in 2007, and this area was deliberately chosen to document natural recovery. Rangers preserved it as an open-air record of destruction and renewal.
The trail shows nature in transition as visitors observe how the forest renews itself after destruction. People can watch how plants and animals gradually return and create new living spaces.
The trail begins at the Ranger Station Schanze and includes a 250-meter accessible section suitable for wheelchairs and families. Visitors are advised to wear sturdy footwear since paths run through natural terrain.
An observation platform in the center of the area lets visitors watch forest regeneration up close. Foxgloves were among the first plants to return after destruction, showing how quickly nature recovers.
