Propsteikirche, Dortmund
Propsteikirche, Dortmund, Gothic church in central Dortmund, Germany
The Propsteikirche St. Johannes Baptist is a Gothic hall church with three naves and richly detailed architectural features throughout. The building displays characteristic Gothic elements with its vaulted ceilings, pointed arches, and finely articulated walls.
The building was originally constructed in 1331 as a monastery church and shaped the city's appearance for centuries. Following severe damage during World War II, it was extensively rebuilt from 1947 to 1967.
The altar displays one of the earliest images of Dortmund city, painted between 1470 and 1480 by artist Derick Baegert. This work captures how the city looked in the late medieval period and remains an important record of that time.
The church welcomes visitors daily, though morning opening times can vary. Regular services throughout the day shape when you can freely explore, so checking ahead helps plan your visit well.
The windows blend medieval religious scenes with modern imagery documenting a dark chapter in the city's past. This unusual combination creates a powerful visual encounter between faith and historical suffering.
