Theater Görlitz, Cultural heritage theater in Görlitz, Germany
Theater Görlitz is a theatre in the center of Görlitz, in the German state of Saxony, built in the historicist style typical of the mid-19th century. The building has a decorated facade, a wide entrance hall, and an auditorium arranged across several levels with balconies facing the stage.
The building opened in 1851, making it one of the oldest working theatres in Saxony. It survived two world wars largely intact and continued to operate through the decades of the German Democratic Republic without a major break in its programming.
Theater Görlitz sits on the border between Germany and Poland, and audiences often come from both sides of the Neisse River. Some productions are staged in both German and Polish, making this one of the few venues in Europe to regularly program in two languages for a shared community.
The theatre is in central Görlitz and easy to reach on foot from the old town. Visitors coming from the Polish side of the border can walk across the bridge from Zgorzelec in just a few minutes.
Theater Görlitz is part of the Gerhart Hauptmann Theater, a company that also runs a second venue in the nearby city of Zittau. This makes it one of the few theatre companies in Germany that regularly operates across two separate cities at the same time.
