Teufelshöhle

Teufelshöhle is a show cave with approximately 174 meters of mapped passages and multiple chambers connected by narrow galleries within the Main-Kinzig district. The cave displays various rock formations and natural features visible during guided exploration of the underground space.

The cave became known in 1584 when a local shepherd reported an incident involving his cow falling into an opening. This early account marked the first documented mention of the site in written records of the region.

The cave drew its name from local superstitions about otherworldly powers, which kept residents away for centuries. This folklore connection remains part of how people relate to the place today and shapes visitor expectations when they arrive.

Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since the cave passages can be damp and uneven underfoot. The entrance is accessible via a short walk from the parking area, making it easy to reach but requiring some basic physical fitness to navigate the underground space.

Five bat species make their home in the cave for hibernation throughout winter months. This wildlife presence means visitor access is restricted seasonally to ensure the animals can rest undisturbed during their dormant period.
