Teufelshöhle, Show cave in Steinau an der Strasse, Germany
The Teufelshöhle extends 174 meters underground, featuring three primary chambers connected by narrow passages within the Main-Kinzig district of Hesse.
In 1584, local shepherd Jox Mellmann reported a mysterious incident when his cow fell into an opening, leading to the initial discovery of the cave.
Local residents avoided the cave until the 19th century due to its connection with devil legends, reflecting the strong influence of Grimm fairy tales.
The cave maintains guided tours from April through September, with visitors accessing the entrance via a ten-minute walk from the Mooshecke parking area.
Five different bat species inhabit the cave throughout the year, requiring annual closure from November to Easter to protect their hibernation period.
