Stufenburg, Medieval castle ruins in Baunach, Germany.
Stufenburg is a castle ruin located on a hilltop in the Baunach area of Upper Franconia. The site shows foundations, wall remains, and defensive earthworks from a former fortification.
The castle was first documented in 1244 and belonged to the Counts of Andechs-Meranien. It passed to the control of the Bishopric of Bamberg in 1397.
The ruins show traces of early medieval building methods, particularly in the walls on the western side. Visitors can see how defensive structures of that era were designed.
The site lies about two kilometers north of Baunach and is accessible through marked hiking paths. It is best reached on foot or by bicycle.
Archaeological findings suggest the site may have served as a defensive fortress as early as the 10th century. This early use makes it an important record of the region's military history.
