Schellenturm, Medieval defense tower in Stuttgart, Germany
The Schellenturm features an octagonal shape with a timbered upper section and stands prominently against the Stuttgart skyline.
Built in 1564 by Hanns Flach von Meeringen, this tower served as part of Stuttgart's fortification system with 43 towers and gates.
The name Schellenturm derives from Schellenwerker, prisoners who wore bells on their clothes while working on city walls and towers.
The tower houses a wine restaurant, Weinstube Schellenturm, which opens Monday through Saturday from 5:00 PM until midnight.
After bombing damage in 1944, the tower required reconstruction, replacing its original massive stone structure with a lighter timber-frame upper section.
