Kloster Reutberg, Franciscan monastery and brewery in Sachsenkam, Germany
Kloster Reutberg is a Benedictine convent with an attached brewery located on elevated ground above the Isarwinkel, from where surrounding mountains are visible. The complex of buildings connects sacred spaces, residential areas for the sisters, and beer production facilities under one management.
A countess founded the convent in the early 1600s as a religious community in this valley. About 60 years later, the sisters received permission to brew beer, which evolved into an important business operation.
The monastery has long served as a center for female religious community and maintains its role as a spiritual gathering place today. The sisters who live here shape daily life at the site and connect traditional craft practices with their work.
The monastery sits in hilly terrain with good walking trails into the surrounding mountains and down toward the river. Visitors can explore the grounds, view the chapel, and shop at the monastery store for local products including beer and regional specialties.
In the 1920s, local brewers and farmers formed a cooperative to expand production and compete using modern methods. This partnership allowed the small brewery to increase its capacity dramatically over a few decades.
