Großherzogliche Mecklenburgische Navigationsschule

The Großherzogliche Mecklenburgische Navigationsschule is a brick building on the Wustrow coast featuring large windows and classical architectural elements. Its spacious rooms and clear layout were designed to accommodate practical maritime education.

The school was founded in 1864 as Mecklenburg's first state navigation academy and operated continuously until 1944. During this period it trained numerous sailors and ship officers.

The school shaped maritime education in northern Germany and demonstrated how navigation and seafaring knowledge were systematically passed down. Instruction took place in spaces designed specifically for this specialized training.

The location sits on the coast and is easily visible from the water, making it accessible for visitors to spot. Today the building houses holiday apartments, so visitors should check whether tours are possible or if viewing is limited to the exterior.

After its closure the building underwent major renovation and now houses holiday apartments, giving the historic structure new purpose. This conversion shows how architectural monuments can serve as residential spaces while preserving their outer character.
