Kreuzhofkapelle, Romanesque church near Danube River in Regensburg, Germany

Kreuzhofkapelle is a Romanesque church in Regensburg built with ribbed vaults, a western gallery, and a semi-circular apse featuring round-arched windows. The interior is arranged on multiple levels with a south-facing entrance through a two-tiered round-arched doorway and a narrow staircase providing access to the upper floor.

The chapel was built as a Romanesque structure during the medieval period in the Upper Palatinate region. Its location became significant in 1156 when Emperor Frederick Barbarossa held a court session here that resulted in the establishment of the Duchy of Austria.

The chapel's name comes from the Kreuzhof courtyard area that once surrounded it. Visitors can observe how this building combined its religious purpose with practical everyday functions that served the community beyond just worship.

The site is accessible on foot and located near the Danube riverbank, which helps with orientation in the city. Visitors should expect uneven pathways and tight spaces, particularly when climbing the western staircase to reach the upper level.

Archaeological digs have uncovered settlement remains dating back to the 5th millennium BC, including artifacts from the Neolithic, Urnfield, and Hallstatt periods. This means the ground beneath the current building holds thousands of years of human history before the medieval chapel was even constructed.
