Friedenspark, Public park in Leipzig, Germany
Friedenspark is a green space between Ostplatz and the Russian Orthodox Church, structured by two parallel north-south avenues in a rectangular layout. The area is organized by trees and pathways that flow naturally across the grounds.
The site was originally the Neue Johannisfriedhof cemetery, opened in 1846 and used for burials until 1950. A chapel and mortuary designed by architect Hugo Licht in 1881 once marked the grounds.
The park includes an Apothecary Garden displaying over 300 medicinal and poisonous plants that teach visitors about their properties and dangers. This section serves both researchers and curious visitors as a place to learn.
The park sits in southeast central Leipzig and is accessible from multiple sides, with Linnestrasse on the west serving as a main entry point. The flat ground and wide paths make walking easy for visitors of all mobility levels.
A memorial within the park honors children who died at the Dösen Asylum during the Nazi era. This quiet remembrance site preserves an important chapter of local history.
