Leipzig Botanical Garden, Botanical research garden at University of Leipzig, Germany.
Leipzig Botanical Garden is a research facility spanning 3.5 hectares with over 7,000 plant species representing diverse climates and regions. Five modern greenhouses shelter tropical and subtropical plants, while outdoor sections display native and temperate species, along with a dedicated butterfly house.
Founded in 1540 at a Dominican monastery, the garden reflects centuries of botanical study and scientific development at the university. The site moved twice before settling at its current Linnéstraße location in 1877, where it has remained the university's primary botanical research center.
The garden serves as a living classroom where visitors observe how plants from across the globe relate to one another and support scientific inquiry. Walking through different sections, you notice how researchers use the organized plant collections to study plant families and their connections.
The garden features level, wheelchair-accessible paths throughout, making all areas easy to navigate. Visiting early in the day works best, as greenhouses remain pleasantly cool and crowds tend to be smaller.
The collection organizes plants by scientific classification, covering 363 plant families that represent roughly two-thirds of all known plant families worldwide. This systematic arrangement helps visitors grasp how different plants relate to and connect with one another across species.
