Fürstenbaumuseum

Fürstenbaumuseum, Regional art museum at Marienberg Fortress in Würzburg, Germany

The Fürstenbaumuseum is an art museum located within Marienberg Fortress in Würzburg with roughly 45 exhibition rooms displaying paintings, sculptures, and archaeological finds from the Franconian region. The collection is housed within the stone fortress walls and features works spanning different time periods.

The museum began in 1831 as the Antiquarium of a local historical society and moved to Marienberg Fortress in 1947 following damage from the Second World War. The relocation to the fortress provided the collection with a new home to expand and develop.

The collection displays works by sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider and other pieces that show how Franconian artists created over centuries. These objects reflect the artistic traditions and skills that developed in the region through different time periods.

The museum operates from March through October and closes from November until mid-March, so a visit works best during the warmer months. Being located within the fortress means sturdy footwear and time to navigate stairs and passages are recommended.

The collection includes detailed city models showing how Würzburg changed architecturally across different historical periods. These models allow visitors to see the city's development in miniature form.
