Marienkirche Herzberg

Marienkirche Herzberg is a brick building with three naves and a tower rising about 64 meters high. The interior is marked by Gothic vaults and preserves artworks spanning several centuries.

The church was built around 1350 on earlier foundations and was restored after a tower fire in 1483. Major changes then took place during the 16th century.

The church displays full-length portraits of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon from the late 16th century on its walls. These images reflect how the place became important to Protestant communities in the region.

Visitors find preserved 15th-century vaulted frescoes inside and a Renaissance pulpit showing the four Evangelists. The southern pillar displays particular artistic details worth examining closely.

The tower top holds a collection of historical documents and coins from different centuries. These valuable items are stored in a sphere beneath the cross and serve as a time capsule of the site's past.
