Gedenkstätte Langer Gang, memorial
Gedenkstätte Langer Gang is a memorial in Schwarzenbach an der Saale that commemorates women who endured a death march in 1945. The structure dates from the late 1800s and was later transformed into a remembrance site, featuring artwork and graves at the nearby cemetery.
The building was constructed in the late 1800s and converted into a memorial in 2004. This followed a death march in April 1945, when approximately 1170 women and girls were forced to walk over 200 kilometers from a camp near Helmbrechts, with at least 147 dying during the journey.
The memorial honors women who died during a forced march, and its name references the long journey they were forced to undertake. Visitors come here to pay respect and reflect on how this place keeps their memory alive in the community.
The memorial is located next to the church and accessible via a small path from the cemetery. The site is open year-round and offers a quiet space for reflection, with visitors finding access through the cemetery gate.
A sculpture by Udo Rödel titled 'erased' visually shows how the women's dignity was stripped away. This artwork makes invisible suffering visible and becomes the central symbol of the site for visitors.
