St. Thomas church Hörnum, Modern church building in Hörnum, Germany.
St. Thomas Church Hörnum is a modern church building with white lime-sandstone walls and three angled triangular gables. The tower-like choir resembles a large sail that points in different directions.
The building was designed in 1970 by Martin Bernhard Christiansen as a replacement for an earlier barrack church that had served the community outside the village. This new structure brought contemporary architecture to the growing settlement.
The interior windows created by Wolf-Dieter Kohler display abstract forms and scenes from the Passion story through colored glass. These artworks shape how light and meaning move through the space.
The church stands at Hangstraße 38 on a dune along the Oberer Dünenweg footpath. Visitors can see the 1993 Hillebrand organ inside, which operates through mechanical play mechanisms.
The structure features non-rectangular walls with triangular shapes that create an architectural form resembling a sailboat. This unconventional design makes it a striking example of modern church architecture near the coast.
