Galgenturm, cultural heritage monument D-6-73-142-78 (0) in Mellrichstadt, Bavaria
The Galgenturm is a round watchtower near Mellrichstadt in Bavaria, standing about 12 meters tall and surrounded by a stone wall. The entrance sits about 4.5 meters above ground and is reached by climbing 25 steps on an external stone staircase.
The tower was built in the 15th century from fieldstone, replacing an earlier wooden structure from the 13th century. It served as a watchtower to monitor approaching threats and was part of Mellrichstadt's defense system.
The tower's name refers to an execution ground about 500 meters south, where Mellrichstadt carried out its last execution in 1554. Today the structure stands quietly in the landscape, holding stories from centuries past within its stone walls.
The tower is easy to reach, situated near federal roads B19 and B285, making it convenient to visit by car or bicycle. From the top, you can enjoy wide views across the surrounding valleys and fields.
An old local tale tells of a man from Mellrichstadt who smuggled meat from the execution ground and hid parts of it near the tower before rushing home. That night, mysterious voices echoed through his house, calling out about his deed and keeping him awake in fear.
