Petersberg, Mountain summit in Marktbergel, Germany.
Petersberg is a mountain in Marktbergel, Bavaria, rising about 504 meters above sea level. From the summit visitors can see across the Aischtal valley and toward the Rhön mountains on clear days.
A chapel honoring Saints Peter and Paul stood on the summit from 1340 onward. It was destroyed during the Peasants' War and locals reused its stones for other purposes.
The mountain takes its name from a chapel that once drew pilgrims to its summit. Today visitors walk past information stations explaining the local wildlife and plants found on the slopes.
Two marked trails lead to the summit with different difficulty levels and features. Wear sturdy shoes and check the weather before you go if you want to enjoy the views from the top.
The mountain is home to around 700 registered plant species, including three types of gentian and several orchids. This diversity is roughly twice the average found elsewhere in the region.
