Petersau, Floodplain in Frankenthal, Germany
Petersau is a floodplain on the left bank of the Rhine, lying between Ludwigshafen and Worms within the municipality of Frankenthal. The area is made up of meadows, farm fields, and natural patches, alongside an equestrian estate and a food production facility.
The land was shaped over centuries by Rhine regulation works that confined the river and turned seasonal flood zones into farmable ground. These changes allowed the floodplain to be settled and used for agriculture, which has defined its character ever since.
The Hofgut Petersau is a riding and breeding estate set within the floodplain, drawing both leisure riders and competition athletes. Visitors passing through the area on foot or by bike can often see horses grazing in the paddocks nearby.
Several cycling routes cross the area and link Ludwigshafen-Oggersheim with Worms and other nearby towns. The paths run mostly flat, making them easy to follow on longer rides along the Rhine.
A large potato chip factory operates right alongside the fields and riverside woodland of this floodplain. The side-by-side presence of food manufacturing and open nature is something few visitors expect to find here.
