Uffoburg

Uffoburg is an early medieval castle complex in Extertal whose archaeological remains lie on a plateau. The foundations, rampart structures, and stone remnants spread across a substantial area and show the typical layout of a medieval fortification.

The castle was founded in the 9th century by Count Uffo as his residence and played an important role in consolidating early medieval power in the Lippe region. Archaeological evidence suggests the site was abandoned by around 920.

The name Uffoburg honors an early medieval count whose rule shaped this region. Today visitors can read from the preserved ramparts and stone foundations how people lived here over a thousand years ago and designed their fortifications.

Visiting requires sturdy footwear and weatherproof clothing as the terrain has uneven surfaces and slopes. The paths to the wall remains are sometimes overgrown and require careful attention to unstable ground.

Archaeological excavations in the early 20th century uncovered pottery fragments that show how everyday life unfolded here. These finds help researchers today understand which craft techniques and trade connections were common in this early medieval community.
