Stift Keppel, Religious monastery and educational institution in Hilchenbach, Germany.
Stift Keppel is a monastery complex in Hilchenbach, North Rhine-Westphalia, made up of several buildings from different periods. The compound houses both a Protestant religious community and a secondary school that uses the historic structures for daily classes.
The foundation was established in 1239 as a Cistercian convent and gradually became a Protestant women's foundation after the Reformation. A school was eventually added to the site and has continued to operate there ever since.
The word "Stift" refers to a Protestant foundation for noblewomen, a form of religious community that shaped this place for centuries. Today, visitors can see how school life and religious tradition continue to coexist on the same grounds.
The site sits on the edge of Hilchenbach and is easiest to reach by car or on foot from the town center. Because parts of the complex are used as a school and private grounds, it is worth contacting the site before visiting.
The convent church at the site is one of the few Romanesque churches in the region that has survived without major later alterations. Its plain style makes it a rare example of early church architecture in Westphalia.
