Alte Burg

Alte Burg is a mountain summit in the Rothaargebirge range, rising to approximately 633 meters and surrounded by dense forests with natural stone formations scattered along its slopes. The wooded terrain creates a rugged landscape with exposed rock faces and steep passages that define the terrain.

In medieval times, the mountain served as a strategic observation point for monitoring movement through the valleys below. This role made it an important element in the regional defense and control networks of the era.

The mountain forms part of a network of historical landmarks in the region, connecting various medieval castles and fortifications through hiking trails.

Multiple marked hiking trails lead to the summit from different starting points throughout the region, with parking available at the main access points. Most routes are moderately challenging and do not require specialized equipment or advanced fitness levels.

From this peak, visitors can look into three German states at once, since the summit sits where North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, and Rhineland-Palatinate meet. This geographical feature makes it a notable location for crossing state boundaries in a single visit.
