Protestant church Crostau, Lutheran church in Schirgiswalde-Kirschau, Germany.
The Kirche zu Crostau is a Lutheran church with a rectangular nave and a square tower at its front right, painted pale yellow-tan. The tower has a clock face on two sides, arched windows and a short grey pyramidal roof, while the nave has a steep slate-grey spire topped by a golden cross. Inside, a curved cream-colored balcony on square pillars faces a gilded organ with silver pipes, and a crystal chandelier hangs before it.
A chapel stood here first, enlarged in the 16th century under Hans Christoph von Rechenberg; in 1732 Christian Heinrich von Watzdorf paid for a Gottfried Silbermann organ. After gable stones fell during a baptism in 1862 and a gallery collapsed during a service on 17 May 1868, mason Karl August Thomas of Neusalza built the present church to plans by inspector Götz. The foundation stone was laid on 14 July 1868 and the church was consecrated on 8 November 1869.
The church keeps the Silbermann organ that Christian Heinrich von Watzdorf, chamberlain to Augustus the Strong, had built at his own expense in 1732. It was removed and stored during the 1868 rebuild, and the parish celebrates its church consecration on the third Sunday of October, the date of the 1869 dedication.
The church stands at the old site in Crostau, where the ground had to be cut and filled before building; the Kirchweih festival was long held on the last Monday in October, later moved to the third Sunday in October. The interior was last extensively renewed in 1956–1958, when the gallery parapets, boxes and pulpit were painted in oil rather than the distemper the conservation office proposed.
The tower cross is not the original: in 1893 the iron weather vane was found badly rusted and replaced by a cross. When the tower roof was re-covered with copper in 1977, copper nails and gold leaf for gilding that cross arrived as gift parcels from West Germany.
