Magdalenenkapelle

The Magdalenenkapelle features high stone walls, pointed arches, and distinctive Gothic architectural elements characteristic of medieval religious structures in central Germany.

First documented in 1227, the chapel served as a cemetery church until 1546, when the adjacent burial ground closed following the Protestant Reformation.

The chapel reflects the changing religious landscape of Erfurt, transforming from a Catholic sanctuary to a Protestant space and later becoming a modern columbarium.

Located near Erfurt Cathedral, the former chapel now functions as a columbarium with 420 urn spaces designed by local artist Evelyn Körber.

Between its religious functions, the building housed the Theater in der Kapelle until 2011, demonstrating its adaptability through different cultural purposes.
