Monacensia, Research library and literary archive in Hildebrandhaus, Munich, Germany.
The Monacensia is a research library and literary archive in Munich, housed in a former sculptor's villa in the Bogenhausen district. Its collection of over 150,000 volumes and documents focuses on Munich authors from the 16th century to today, alongside materials on the city's history.
The institution was founded in 1921 to gather writings about Munich and by Munich authors. In 1977 it moved to its current home, a villa built and lived in by a sculptor, which gave it much more space for research and collections.
The archive holds personal papers from around 300 Munich authors, including letters and manuscripts from the Mann family. Browsing these materials in the reading room gives a direct sense of how literature was made in the city.
Anyone wanting to view original manuscripts or archive materials should register in advance, as access to the reading room is managed. The villa is in Bogenhausen and easy to reach by public transport, so planning ahead helps you make the most of a visit.
The original writing desks of two well-known Munich authors are on permanent display inside the building. These personal pieces of furniture remain as the writers left them, making the space where their works were created feel tangible.
