Monacensia, Research library and literary archive in Hildebrandhaus, Munich, Germany.
The Monacensia is a specialized research library and literary archive housed in a former sculptor's villa that holds more than 150,000 volumes and documents. Its collection focuses on works by Munich authors from the 16th century to today, along with materials exploring the city's history and culture.
The institution was established in 1921 to gather and preserve writings about Munich and by Munich authors. In 1977, it moved to its current home in a villa designed by a sculptor, expanding its permanent research space.
The archive holds personal papers from around 300 Munich authors, including extensive collections from the Mann family with original letters and manuscripts. You can view the handwritten works and private materials of these writers to understand how they created their publications.
A visit typically requires advance registration, especially if you want to view original manuscripts or archive materials. The villa sits in a quiet neighborhood and is accessible by public transportation, but planning ahead ensures you can access the collections you want.
Original writing desks from two well-known Munich authors remain on permanent display in the building. These personal workspaces offer a direct connection to where and how these writers actually created their published works.
