Gentilhaus

Gentilhaus is an art museum and historic building in Aschaffenburg that displays paintings and sculptures across several floors. A central staircase connects the gallery spaces and provides access to the artworks arranged throughout the house.

A wealthy industrialist named Anton Gentil founded this museum in 1922 by combining his private residence with exhibition spaces. This came at a time when private collectors were starting to open their homes to the public for viewing artworks.

The house takes its name from Anton Gentil, the industrialist who assembled the collection on display. Visitors can see how a wealthy person of the early 1900s chose and arranged artworks to reflect his own tastes and interests.

This museum is open from April through October and is best visited by contacting ahead to arrange access. Guided tours through the collection are available and help explain both the artworks and the building's history.

The ground floor preserves Gentil's original living spaces, including his personal bedroom and a private chapel. These rooms reveal how closely the collector's home and art collection were intertwined in daily life.
