Heriboldisburg

Heriboldisburg is a castle ruin near Herbolzheim in Germany, where a round stone tower and sections of the original defensive walls still stand. The tower has been reinforced in recent years and is now safe for visitors to explore the remains of this medieval fortification.

The fortress was founded in the 12th century by the Knights of Herbolzheim and came under the control of Worms Cathedral in 1330. This transition marked a significant change in how the site was managed and used over the following generations.

The fortress represents the architectural traditions of medieval German defensive structures, with its strategic position overlooking the Jagst River valley.

The ruin site is easily accessible on foot and offers free access to the remains without barriers. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the ground is uneven and pathways wind around the old fortification.

The current name originated in 1902 from a misprint in a historical text that became fixed in records and remains in use today. Interestingly, stones from the original fortress were later reused in the construction of a local bridge.
