Schloss Wachwitz, Château in Wachwitz district, Dresden, Germany.
Schloss Wachwitz is a three-wing castle set on a hillside estate with gardens and terraces along the Elbe slopes east of Dresden. The building is now divided into residential units and still retains many of its original architectural details throughout.
Saxon Elector Friedrich August II bought two vineyards along the Elbe in 1824 and had the existing winegrower's house converted into a castle. Over the following decades the estate was gradually expanded until it reached its current form.
Schloss Wachwitz features a neobaroque facade with carved wooden details and decorated railings that speak to the taste of its former owners. These ornate touches are still visible on the exterior and in parts of the interior that visitors can observe today.
The estate sits on a hillside above the Elbe valley, and the terraces and garden areas offer views of the river and the land around it. The ground is uneven in places, so sturdy footwear is a good idea before exploring the gardens and slopes.
An expressionist frog fountain stands in the honor courtyard and is one of the more unexpected artworks found on the grounds. A small chapel with oval windows nearby contains a family crypt that once served as a private burial place for the former owners.
