Loschwitz Cemetery, Heritage cemetery in Loschwitz district, Dresden, Germany
Loschwitz Cemetery is a burial ground arranged in multiple sections with a meadow layout, consisting of the original part, an addition from 1918, and an urn garden from 1927. The chapel built in 1893 was designed by Friedrich Reuter and features stained glass windows by Wilhelm Walther.
The cemetery was established around 1800 to replace the churchyard of the original Loschwitz church as the growing community needed more burial space. It was later expanded multiple times to meet the changing needs of the population.
Artists from the adjacent Loschwitz artistic community created monuments here across generations, making the cemetery a place where grief and creativity meet. Their works show how this place became a space for artistic reflection on loss and remembrance.
The cemetery has a quiet character and is easy to walk through with clear paths connecting the different sections. Visitors should allow time to explore the grounds leisurely, especially if they want to view the many artistic monuments and the chapel.
A striking sculpture titled 'Death with Bomb' commemorates victims of the Dresden bombing and shows Death as a figure carrying both a bomb and a scythe. This unusual depiction makes the cemetery a place where the city's fate during World War II remains visibly remembered.
