Großer Kornberg, Mountain summit in Fichtel Mountains, Germany.
Großer Kornberg is a granite summit in the northeastern part of the Fichtel Mountains in Bavaria, rising to 827 meters and forming the northeastern corner of this mountain range. The peak is fully covered with forest and surrounded by other summits of similar height.
The mountain first appeared in written records in 1317 under the name Kurnberg. The name comes from Middle High German and refers to a mill that once operated on its slopes.
The Großer Kornberg sits near the border between Bavaria and the Czech Republic, giving it a position between two neighboring cultures. The trail to the top passes through dense spruce forest and ends at the Schönburg watchtower, which most visitors treat as the main goal of their walk.
Several marked hiking trails lead to the summit, and the Schönburg watchtower at the top offers open views over the surrounding mountains. The paths run through dense forest, so good footwear is advisable, especially after rain.
Old granite quarries at the base of the mountain expose different geological layers that are rarely found so close together. The stone near the bottom is coarse-grained, while the rock higher up shows a noticeably finer texture.
