Grube Göttelborn, Coal mine complex in Quierschied, Germany
Grube Göttelborn is a closed coal mine in Quierschied with three preserved winding towers. The largest of these towers stands 90 meters tall and was built in 1990 for shaft number four.
Coal extraction at this location began in the 15th century with small pits, but only developed into a major industrial facility from 1887 onwards. The mine closed in 2000 after playing an important role in the economic history of the Saar region.
The preserved mining structures show how important coal extraction was to the region and still shape the landscape today. Visitors see here traces of a working world that shaped generations of families.
The site is open to the public and displays old mining technology outdoors where you can view the winding towers from outside. Wear comfortable shoes as the ground is uneven and there are few shaded spots.
The site now uses solar panels on the historic structures, producing renewable energy at a location that once extracted fossil fuels. This transformation shows an interesting contrast between industrial past and modern sustainability goals.
