Haus Nehlen

Haus Nehlen is a medieval moated château in Welver located on an island surrounded by water channels. The two-story structure has a rectangular form with a steep gabled roof and represents a typical example of defensive architecture from that period.

The château was first documented in 1268 when it served to defend the northern border of Rüdenberg County and the Archdiocese of Cologne. It played an important role in the region's defensive system during medieval times.

The Renaissance entrance displays carved architectural details and family coats of arms that reflect the noble background of past inhabitants. These ornamental elements still shape the character of the entryway today.

The château underwent extensive renovation between 2011 and 2013, including roof work, stone replacement, and window sill restoration. Access to the island and visiting conditions should be checked beforehand since the structure remains privately occupied.

A sculptor lives and works in one section of the château while a farming family occupies the other half. This unusual shared arrangement brings together artistic and agricultural activities under one historical roof.
