Nibelungensteig, Long-distance hiking trail in Odenwald, Germany.
Nibelungensteig is a long-distance hiking trail through the Odenwald region that runs about 130 kilometers from Zwingenberg to Freudenberg am Main, passing through forests, hills, and valleys. The route crosses three German states and moves through diverse landscapes that shift between dense woodland and open ridge areas.
The trail began in 2008 with an initial section from Zwingenberg to Grasellenbach and was expanded to become a certified quality hiking route by 2012. The regions it connects have been shaped by woodland and upland geology for centuries.
The trail takes its name from the medieval Nibelung legend and passes near locations linked to the hero Siegfried's story. Walkers can experience how the landscape connects to this ancient tale as they move through the region.
Red N markers on white backgrounds guide hikers throughout the entire route, making it easy to stay on path. Multiple access points to towns with public transport connections allow walkers to break the hike into sections or choose different starting points.
The trail passes through the UNESCO Global Geopark Bergstraße-Odenwald, where hikers encounter ancient geological formations and historic stone structures. These natural features turn the walk into more than a simple hike, revealing the earth's history written in the landscape.
