Schloss Ammerland, Château in Münsing, Bavaria, Germany

Schloss Ammerland stands at the edge of the Starnberger See in the Ammerland district of Münsing. The New Palace, directly on the water, is a white multi-storey building with a red tiled roof and two green onion-domed towers; the hidden Old Palace dates from the 16th century. The New Palace was built in 1683/85, probably by Caspar Feichtmayr in the style of the Wessobrunn school, and was renovated in 1990.

The estate was raised to a Hofmark in 1596, with the Lerchenfeld family living in the hidden Altes Schloss. From 1681 it passed to three Wittelsbach prince-bishops; Albrecht Sigmund commissioned the Neues Schloss, built 1683/85 in the Wessobrunn school style. After 1770 it was held as a fief by the Baumgarten family, and in 1815 the jurisdiction was abolished and Ammerland became free property. Restored in 1990, it remains in private ownership.

The name Ammerland refers to the estate, not the lake; the German Wikipedia also calls the complex a ruin in its opening line. From 1681 three Wittelsbach prince-bishops held it, beginning with Albrecht Sigmund, bishop of Freising and Regensburg, who commissioned the New Palace. Later the "Kasperlgraf" Franz von Pocci (1807–1876) used it as a summer residence and made it a meeting place for artists; the painter Moritz von Schwind stayed there in 1853.

The building is located in Münsing-Ammerland along Nördliche Seestraße and is easily accessible from the lakeshore path. Its proximity to the water provides flexible access options depending on whether you arrive on foot or by car.

The name Ammerland does not come from the lake: the settlement gave its name to the castle, and the lake is the Starnberger See, not the Ammersee. The Bavarian monument list records the estate under file number D-1-73-137-23, and the grounds also hold an underground monument with traces of the earlier building and its chapel of the Holy Three Kings.
