Goldbacher Stollen

Goldbacher Stollen, Underground tunnel system in Überlingen, Germany.

Goldbacher Stollen is an underground tunnel system extending roughly 4,000 meters through soft Molasse rock beneath the northern shore of Lake Überlingen. The network consists of passages that visitors can walk through on guided tours that last up to two hours.

Between June 1944 and April 1945, prisoners from a concentration camp constructed these passages to relocate military production from Friedrichshafen during World War II. The construction work ceased as the war came to an end.

The tunnel complex now serves as a documentation center preserving the memory of those who suffered during its construction. Visitors encounter displays and information about the forced labor that took place beneath the lakeshore.

The tunnel maintains a constant temperature of around 12 degrees Celsius throughout the year, so visitors should bring warmer clothing. It is best to arrange a guided tour in advance with local operators.

The moisture content of the Molasse rock prevented the tunnel entrances from collapsing completely when French military forces attempted to destroy them in 1947. Water within the rock formation inadvertently protected the structure from total destruction.
