Gysenbergpark, Recreation park in Herne, Germany
Gysenbergpark is a Revierpark in Herne, in the Ruhr region of North Rhine-Westphalia, combining outdoor play areas, sports facilities, a small animal section, and a thermal spa called LAGO. The grounds are spread across a green landscape where different zones are connected by open paths.
The park was created in the 1970s as part of a network of leisure areas built across the Ruhr region to serve the local industrial workforce. Over the years its facilities grew, and the bathing complex that later became LAGO was added to the site.
Every year from mid-November through December, the park hosts a Christmas market where visitors can find regional food, local crafts, and seasonal goods. For many families in the area, this market has become a regular part of the holiday season.
Most of the outdoor areas are best enjoyed in the warmer months, when the majority of the facilities are open. Some attractions on the grounds require coins to use, so it is worth bringing small change when you visit.
At the park entrance stands a mechanical donkey figure that turns inserted coins into golden tokens. This tradition has been part of the park for decades and many visitors still stop to use it on arrival.
