Gänseliesel-Brunnen, Bronze fountain in Stone Gate Square, Hannover, Germany.
The Gänseliesel-Brunnen is a bronze fountain in the main square featuring a life-sized statue of a girl watching over geese. A granite column supports the figure and is decorated with four bronze reliefs showing rural scenes.
The fountain was created in 1898 by designer Karl Dopmeyer and originally stood on Goseriede Street. It was moved in 1981 due to underground railway construction in the area.
The figure on the fountain recalls when geese grazed outside the city walls and shaped the area's character. It shows how livestock raising once mattered to daily life in Hannover.
The fountain sits on a central plaza and is easy to reach on foot from nearby streets. Daytime visits work best for seeing the details of the bronze reliefs and statue clearly.
Water flows through the geese beaks and a frog mouth into bronze shell basins on the fountain. These details showcase the craftsmanship and playful design of the original work.
