H2--Zentrum für Gegenwartskunst im Glaspalast, Contemporary art museum in a former textile mill, Augsburg, Germany
The H2 Center for Contemporary Art occupies a former textile mill in Augsburg's textile district, using 2000 square meters (21500 square feet) of exhibition space within an industrial building featuring metal and glass structures. The rooms accommodate rotating displays of contemporary art in an authentic industrial setting.
The building was designed by architect Philipp Jakob Manz and opened in 1910 as a cotton spinning mill serving the textile industry for decades. It was transformed into an art center in 2006, preserving its industrial heritage while welcoming contemporary art.
The space features rotating exhibitions with international and regional artists focused on contemporary forms. Visitors encounter a mix of established names alongside local creators working in the present moment.
The center is laid out for visitors with different needs, with accessible entrances and clearly marked paths through the exhibition spaces. A specialized art library and an artwork rental service are available to enhance the visit.
The center operates an art rental program allowing visitors to borrow over 140 paper artworks for two-month periods. This arrangement makes original works temporarily part of daily life at home rather than exclusively for gallery viewing.
