Basthorst Manor, Manor house in Basthorst, Germany
Basthorst Manor is a red brick manor house in the Lauenburg district of northern Germany, set within an extensive estate that includes meadows and fruit orchards. Around thirty historic farm buildings surround the main house and form a unified complex dating from different centuries.
This estate originated in the 13th century and remained in the hands of the same family for over four hundred years. Over time, the outbuildings grew around the main residence and shaped the current farmyard layout.
The name Basthorst comes from the Middle Low German word for a wooded hill and reflects the early farming character of this area. Craftspeople work today in the old barns, where visitors can watch blacksmithing, distilling, and furniture restoration taking place.
The regional train RE1 from Hamburg to Schwarzenbek brings travelers nearby, and from there a local bus runs to Basthorst stop. The paths between the buildings are unpaved, so sturdy shoes are recommended during wet weather.
A Christmas market in December transforms the old barns and courtyards into selling spaces for three hundred regional craftspeople. The market runs over several weekends and reveals the full extent of the estate grounds.
