Burg Linau

Burg Linau is a castle ruin in the Herzogtum Lauenburg region featuring a round tower with walls about three meters thick. The tower displays the solid construction style of medieval defensive structures from this period.

The castle was first documented in 1291 under the name Linowe and served the Scharffenberg family as a fortification. In 1349 the site fell to new hands after a siege lasting several weeks.

The castle ruins represent a significant period of medieval German fortification architecture, reflecting the power dynamics between noble families in Schleswig-Holstein.

You can reach the ruins via walking paths that also lead to the nearby Billequelle spring and the surrounding landscape. It is advisable to wear sturdy footwear since the terrain is rough and uneven in places.

The round tower was partially rebuilt using field stones, creating a visible contrast between the original medieval masonry and modern repairs. This contrast allows visitors to read the history of the restoration work in the stonework itself.
