Hasselbachplatz is a protected square in central Magdeburg with historic buildings displaying ornate facades and architectural details from different periods. The square creates a spacious gathering space surrounded by residential buildings and older structures that define its character.

The square emerged during Magdeburg's expansion from the mid-19th century, when the fortifications were dismantled and the suburbs of Sudenburg (1867) and Buckau (1887) were incorporated. Before 1890 it was simply called "Gabelung", the fork where the road split toward Buckau and Sudenburg. It was laid out in a star shape and built up with Gründerzeit buildings, some with Baroque elements. From 1890 to 7 April 1927 the 15-metre Hasselbach fountain stood on the square, removed to make room for cars and trams; a reconstruction is on Haydnplatz. On 17 June 1953 the square was the starting point of the popular uprising in Magdeburg.

Locals call the area around the square the Magdeburger Kiez, after the roughly three dozen pubs, bars, restaurants and discos on and around it. The name recalls Carl Gustav Friedrich Hasselbach, mayor of Magdeburg for many years. The square is classified as a crime hotspot and is monitored by video cameras from the surrounding buildings.

Multiple tram and bus lines connect at the square, making it a key transportation hub for reaching different neighborhoods in the city. Visitors will find good orientation and easy access to other areas of Magdeburg from this central location.
