Hansa-Gymnasium Hansestadt Stralsund

Hansa-Gymnasium is a three-story brick building in Art Nouveau style with neo-Gothic elements that rises along the Strelasund waterfront. The school contains classrooms, laboratories, and sports facilities distributed across the campus.

The building was founded in 1560 on the grounds of a former Dominican monastery and served as the city's sole public school for a long time. During World War II, an aeronautical engineering school temporarily used it as a dormitory.

The school carries the name of a historical merchant league tradition and is now attended by students from various neighborhoods who develop their daily routines here. The building has become a familiar landmark for locals and is woven into the city's character.

The school operates as an all-day facility with classes and optional programs, functioning as an independent institution since 2007. Keep in mind that the building is in regular use during school hours, so the best time to visit is outside of class times.

The school building temporarily housed a specialized aeronautical engineering school during the war, a fact that few visitors know about. This unexpected use shows how the location adapted to wartime needs.
